What is Alimony?

Alimony, also known as spousal support, is financial support from one spouse to the other, that is ordered by a court following a divorce.

There are Five Types of Alimony:

1.) Temporary

This type of support only lasts for the duration of the divorce proceedings.

2.) Permanent

This type of support lasts until the death of either spouse, or until the spouse receiving support remarries.

3.) Reimbursement

This type  of support is for spouses who made sacrifices to advance the other spouse. This could include staying home while the other spouse receives an education or works towards a career.

4.) Rehabilitative

This type of support helps the spouse earning less, to get on their feet. It often lasts until the spouse earning less finds a stable job.

5.) Lump-Sum

This type of support is when one spouse gives the other money instead of property during the settlement.
